Reading boosts vocabulary, confidence, says college

The Librarian, Corona College of Education in Lagos, Mr Waheed Abudu, said reading enhances vocabulary and boosts confidence.

During the donation of 470 reading books to Majolate Nursery and Primary School in Ilupeju, Lagos, Abudu emphasised the need to revive the reading culture in schools, aiming to nurture children from a young age.

“Reading enhances vocabulary and builds confidence. It plays a crucial role in learning across all subjects and serves as a foundational element of education. There are countless insights to be gained from books

“I am optimistic that the reading culture among children today will flourish. With this donation, we aim to encourage them to read. Additionally, we plan to visit the school to organise training sessions for both pupils and teachers. I urge other librarians to join us in promoting the culture of reading,” he stated.

The registrar of Corona College of Education, Mrs Olufunmilayo Afe, spoke on behalf of the management, explaining that the initiative is part of an annual Corporate Social Responsibility program aimed at positively impacting the local community.

Afe encouraged the children to visit the library frequently and read the donated books to expand their horizons beyond Nigeria.

“We are not donating just ordinary storybooks; these are educational, inspirational, and informative resources for your library. When you visit the library, simply ask for ‘Corona books,’ and they will be provided to you.

“Don’t let cobwebs and dust gather on these books. By reading them, you’ll feel as though you’ve traveled beyond Nigeria. You’ll experience different climates and activities as the stories transport you. Countless adventures are waiting for you in these books, so be sure to make the most of them and continue exploring,” she said.

The registrar then urged teachers and aspiring educators to enhance their skills at Corona College of Education through its affordable, tech-centered Nigeria Certificate in Education and professional diploma programs.
