Stakeholders urge Nigerians to patronise locally-made textiles

Nigeria’s once-thriving textile industry has faced significant challenges in recent years.

However, stakeholders are advocating for renewed efforts to promote local brands to boost domestic demand and drive economic growth.

This call was made during a recent symposium, exhibition, and runway event organised by the Wear Nigeria Fashion and Culture Initiative.

The three-day event, themed ‘The Future of the Nigerian Textile Tradition and its Socio-Economic Significance’, was held in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy and the Lagos State Government.

The first two days of the event took place at Alliance Française, Mike Adenuga Centre, Osborne Road, Ikoyi, while the grand finale was held at the Ballroom, Oriental Hotel, Lekki Expressway, Lagos.

Commending the initiative for its dedication to promoting Nigerian traditional textiles, former Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism, Elizabeth Jemitola, called on the government to support the industry.

“Reviving Nigeria’s traditional textile industry requires a comprehensive national policy approach that considers the historical, cultural, economic, and environmental aspects of this vital sector.

“Fostering creativity and expertise among local designers and workers through training programmes can elevate the quality and competitiveness of Nigerian textiles,” she said.

Highlights of the event included a panel discussion featuring Professor Marian Iyeh, a lecturer at the Yaba College of Technology; Omoligho Udenta, an environment and culture activist; Elizabeth Jemitola, and fashion designer Salami Mohammed.
