Sunshine Stars sack head coach over poor performance

The Management of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, Ondo State has sacked the head coach of the team, Edith Agoye.

Aside from Agoye, members of his technical crew, Assistant Coaches Akin Olowokere, Banjo Adepoju and Folorunsho Stephen were also fired.

The state Commissioner for Sports and Youths Development, Mr Bamidele Ologunloluwa, disclosed this at a meeting with the technical crew of the team, on Monday.

The commissioner said the action of the management became necessary following a poor run of form after several ultimatums given to the coaching crew by the management of the football club

Ologunloluwa explained that the government would not wait until the Sunshine Stars began to fight to survive relegation before action would be taken.

According to him, the mandate given to the team had not been met, saying he as the commissioner gave all to support the coaching crew, but it was “unfortunate that it has to come to this.”

He said, “It’s not going to be business as usual, I don’t want to fight relegation anymore, it is not about witch-hunting. Once a technical crew is not performing, the job is about hiring and firing as we all know.”

In his reaction, Agoye, a former international, expressed appreciation to the commissioner for the opportunity given to him, to be the head coach and work with the team, wishing the team well in its future endeavours.

“I can only wish the club all the best going forward and I wish the coming coach the best of luck,” Agoye simply said.

Sunshine Stars are currently 12th on the table with 22 points from 19 matches in the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League season.
