West African Boxing Union champion, Raheem “Badoo” Animashaun, will headline GOtv Boxing Night 33 against Beninois opponent, Jean Coffi, at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on April 26.
The 17-year-old sensation, who became the youngest-ever WABU champion at GOtv Boxing Night 32, is set to defend his Super Flyweight title in what promises to be an explosive continental clash.
Animashaun not only claimed the WABU belt in his previous outing but also walked away with the N1 million cash prize attached to the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy, awarded to the best boxer of the night.
Born and raised in a modest Lagos household, “Badoo” was introduced to boxing by his father, Jamiu Animashaun, who saw the sport as a potential path out of their financial challenges. The elder Animashaun, who also serves as his son’s trainer, fought in two editions of GOtv Boxing Night himself.
That paternal guidance is now bearing fruit with championship belts and growing recognition. The family’s boxing tradition continues to expand, as his 12-year-old sister has also taken up the sport, inspired by her brother’s success.
While establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s brightest boxing prospects, Animashaun recently gained admission to study Law at the University of Lagos. The teenage pugilist shared that his academic pursuit is part of a long-term plan to build a stable future beyond sports and to better understand how systems work.
Animashaun’s story has quickly become a symbol of hope and ambition for many Nigerian youths, especially those who feel forced to choose between education and sport. His ability to pursue both, even under challenging conditions, highlights a discipline and determination beyond his years.
As GOtv Boxing Night 33 approaches, all eyes will be on “Badoo” as he represents a new generation of Nigerian athletes. GOtv Boxing Night 33 is organised by Flykite Productions and sponsored by GOtv Nigeria.
