UCL goal thrills Lookman

African Footballer of The Year Ademola Lookman has expressed delight after scoring in Atalanta’s 5-0 demolition of Austrian champions Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

“Just doing what I do,” Lookman wrote on social media on Wednesday, alongside pictures of his goal celebration.

The Super Eagles forward came off the bench at half-time and made an instant impact, having a goal disallowed after setting up Charles De Ketelaere before finally getting on the scoresheet with a header at the back post late in the game.

The 26-year-old also missed two clear chances, being denied twice in quick succession by Sturm Graz goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, before blazing over when one-on-one with the Dutch shot-stopper.

His fourth Champions League goal of the season helped secure Atalanta’s place in the knockout play-offs, with the Italian side now needing just a draw against Barcelona on January 29 to qualify directly for the round of 16.

Lookman was named the Player of The Match award in the fixture and received a rating of 8.46 by BBC.

The former Everton forward has been in scintillating form this season, with 14 goals and seven assists in 26 appearances across all competitions, including 10 goals and five assists in 18 Serie A matches as Atalanta sit third in the league standings.

Lookman’s performances saw him crowned 2024 African Footballer of The Year last month, becoming the sixth Nigerian to win the prestigious award after Victor Osimhen claimed the honour in 2023.
