[UPDATED] EPL: Man Utd’s sporting director Ashworth leaves after five months

Manchester United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, departed the club on Sunday after just five months.

Ashworth, appointed on July 1, 2024, oversaw transfer spending of over £200 million during the summer window, according to Sky Sports.

“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during this transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future,” read the club statement.

Ashworth’s departure from the Premier League club followed Saturday’s 3-2 loss at home to fifth-placed Nottingham Forest.

Before leaving Newcastle for Old Trafford, Man Utd’s minority owner, Jim Ratcliffe, had referred to Ashworth, 53, as “one of the best sporting directors in the world.”

Ashworth, alongside the club’s Chief Executive, Omar Berrada, played a key role in the appointment of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag after United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham left the team in 14th place in the EPL.

However, Amorim has had a mixed start to his managerial career at the Theatre of Dreams, winning two games, losing two, and drawing one. The club currently sits in 13th place with 19 points.
