UPDATED: Spain’s Euro 2024 winning coach De la Fuente extends contract

Spain’s Euro 2024-winning coach, Luis de la Fuente, extended his contract on Monday until 2028, according to a statement from the Spanish Football Federation.

“The Spanish Football Federation has agreed to renew its confidence in Luis de la Fuente, who will continue as national coach until after the European Championship in 2028,” the RFEF said in the statement.

The 63-year-old, who has held the position since 2022, led Spain to the Nations League title in 2023 and a triumph over England in last year’s Euro final.

The contract extension covers the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as Euro 2028 in Britain and Ireland.

Before managing the senior team, De la Fuente coached various Spain age-group sides, winning both the European Under-19 and Under-21 Championships.

He succeeded Luis Enrique as head coach after Spain’s last-16 exit from the 2022 World Cup, where they were eliminated by Morocco.

Spain claimed a record-breaking fourth European Championship title last year, winning all seven of their matches in Germany.

La Roja will begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign later this year, following the conclusion of the Nations League, in which they will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals in March.
