Vandalism: TCN deploys CCTV cameras in substations

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has installed CCTV cameras across its 39 substations in the Lagos Zone to address the challenge of vandalism.

The TCN Lagos Zone’s General Manager, Mojeed Akintola, disclosed this on Tuesday during a tour of the TCN’s ongoing and completed projects across Lagos State and its environs.

Akintola declared that the decision to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across all 39 substations in the Lagos Zone stemmed from the continuous threat posed by vandals.

He revealed that in 2022 alone, TCN had experienced 10 deliberate attacks on its transmission towers.

“This heightened security measure aims to monitor and deter potential vandals, safeguarding the crucial infrastructure that plays a pivotal role in the region’s power transmission and distribution network,” he added.

He further noted that in addressing the issue of vandalism, “The company has established partnerships with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence and other security agencies in the country and have also engaged kings and high chiefs, recognising the crucial role communities could play in curbing this problem”.

According to Akintola, the company has also reached out to companies that patronise vandals by buying vandalised components and equipment as scrap to desist from such acts to curb the current challenge.

He noted that the ongoing projects of installation of transformers across different areas of Lagos and Ogun States would increase the transmission of electricity to distribution companies.

Akintola added that some transformers had already been installed and would be commissioned in a matter of weeks.
