Why Many Artistes Are Depressed – Starry

Nigerian singer Starry Ogbonna, popularly known as Starry, has said many Nigerian artistes fall into depression as a result of the difficult, behind the scenes experiences they undergo in the course of building their careers.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP, the artiste who came to limelight in 2019, said music artistes exert so much effort as sleepless nights, financial commitments when creating music without breakthrough due to lack of proper orientation, PR presentation and inability to creatively position themselves to earn a living from their craft.

“The sacrifices artistes put in behind closed studios are deep and hard to explain. Nobody informs you or warns you ahead that the rise and fall of an artiste depends on how much money and clout they wield.

“Most artistes fall into depression because of all the money pumped into production, marketing and distribution of music. It is an investment with unpredictable returns.

Starry compared money spent on music to that spent on a fine cloth washed away in the sea. “It might come back in one piece much neater or ripped by waves and sunken into the sea.”

Starry’s recent EP, Starry EP, a blend of Afrosounds was released November 10, 2023. She has had collaborative projects resulting in a five track EP titled Love and Ogologo. Her other EPs are an RnB sound Omalicha, and an Amapiano style piece Pami, featuring Kodi V.
