Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has said Nigeria can win the 2025 AFCON tournament following the draw in Morocco on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Nigeria were drawn in Group C of the tournament along with 2004 champions Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.
The tournament will be played from December 21 to January 18, 2026, in the North African country.
Yobo, who captained the country to their third AFCON title at the 2013 edition in South Africa, said the Super Eagles had the squad depth to win a fourth title in Morocco.
“We have a good young crop and a new generation of players that have been together for a long time, so I don’t think that understanding is a problem for them,” Yobo said at the draw in Rabat.
“We have shown that at the last AFCON, we got the final; we were very unlucky not to have won so if we can build on that momentum and take it a bit further, we can get to the final and hopefully win it this time.”
The former Everton defender also expressed confidence that the team will make it out of the group stages without problems.
“In the Super Eagles, we never have problems making it out of the groups so I’m not really bothered about it. We can meet the hosts in the knockout round but anybody can go home from there.”
Yobo earned 101 caps for the Super Eagles at three FIFA World Cups and six AFCON tournaments.
At the 2013 tournament which he led Nigeria to, he lost his place in the heart of the defence but lifted the trophy after appearing as an 89th-minute substitute in Nigeria’s 1-0 final defeat of Burkina Faso.
